Designing an IoT solution


IoT is not new and because of its dynamic use-cases and customizable capabilities, it still finds itself in the POC realm. Nonetheless, there has been good progress in its deployment and recently it is becoming increasingly adopted by people while its market is predicted to grow about 4 time the size it is now by the year 2020. This article is written based on the insights given by Srivatsan Padmanabhan, VP, Accenture Technology.

Real-time simulations

The name digital twin comes from a concept which defines itself as a virtual avatar while it mimics real-time situations. Scientifically they could be called as simulations. The whole point here is to provide deeper insights into the assets in the field which comprises of connected machines in real time. The only difference here is insights are developed and simulated much before, giving a head start to prevent future damages and achieve greater performance.

Real world example

Taking a deeper look at the twin concept, this twin could be a virtual copy of the actual machine connected to the analytics engine. It will have all the properties configured to run in the same way within the simulated virtual environment compared to the real world. The use cases vary with varying deployments. According to CP Srivatsan, we can take an example of an aircraft engine of commercial flights. The engines relay information about their performance and crucial events by thousands of gigabytes per engine. This data is like feedback. The feedback is important to know if the engines are running in full compatibility with the set parameters. The feedback gets compared to the digital version and benchmarked against the expectation in the simulated environment. If it is not run in an optimum way, the system can help in making decisions to increase its operational efficiency.

Not in distant future, this concept can implement design improvements where they can input from the existing machine and create improvised models to the overall product design.

Predicting errors

Analysis and threat removal is the primary object of this system. As discussed, one way this model will be improvising design to meet future needs. But currently, it is critical to assess if there is a scope for failure around the corner, taking the example of aircraft engine again,

The Original equipment manufacturer or OEM’s are already benefitting as they are able to provide sustained service, solutions and undivided attention to their machines working worldwide. This helps them realize and address failures much before they occur. “Predictive analytics is just a part of it and if it is likely to go wrong at some point of time, the sensors would pick up the anomaly, compare it to the benchmarks and assess the situation to take a better decision. If it does that continuously, without any doubt, the insights will help make a better iteration of the product.

It is good for business

Every major corporation and companies who adopted this are looking at generating more revenue. This viable concept will, in fact, generate revenue, as well as improve their feedback which could save millions in investments. Digital twin concept has gained a lot of traction and it shares the same concept as of IoT philosophically. With IoT in Picture, enterprises are making room for more storage, good quality sensors at cheaper prices and coding intelligent systems. The future is here and will evolve with IoT.
